TSMC Rumored To Have Secured Licenses For Selling Chips To Huawei
Following a change to U.S. export control laws that came into effect last month, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) stopped providing Huawei Technologies Limited with semiconductors fabricated on high-end processing nodes. As a result, Huawei became unable to secure certain products from TSMC, which affected its ability to compete in the high-end flagship smartphone market. The restrictions also made securing semiconductors for products including notebooks tricky.
Now, after TSMC reported sequential and quarterly revenue growth during its third quarter and year-to-date 2020 earlier this week, a rumor in China suggests that the fab has secured some relief from American authorities in its ability to deal with Huawei. The report states that TSMC will be able to provide products that are fabricated on mature manufacturing nodes to TSMC, but it does not mention which nodes the company will be able to use.
United States said that as long as it does not involve 5G, it will allow more companies to supply Huawei. What signal will it reveal?
